A FINE EARLY GEORGE II MAHOGANY CARD-TABLE

A fine early George III serpentine card table in figured mahogany, the top with a finely carved edge, and a baize lined interior opening on a concertina frame and standing on four well drawn carved cabriole legs, with a central cabochon surrounded by acanthus leaves, and terminating in scroll toes.
English circa 1760

Width: 36” 92 cm
Depth: 17¾” 45cm
Height: 29” 73 cm

Provenance

Fonthill Abbey
Richard, 2nd Marquees of Westminster who was at Fonthill Abbey, Wiltshire, in the early part of the 19th Century.

It is highly likely that this table was part of the original furnishings of Fonthill Abbey that was built in 1745 by William Beckford, and designed by James Wyatt

Note
The same distinctive leg design incorporating Roman acanthus-wrapped cabochons and flutes features on a number of pieces attributed to Paul Saunders the Soho firm of cabinet-makers and upholsterers established circa 1751.
