Period of QIANLONG (1736-1795)
Qianlong period pair of ‘famille-rose’ salts

Offered by Oriental Art
Date & Origin 1736 to 1795, China
Dimensions
Dia
3.25 inch (8 cm)
Description
This very pretty pair of receptacles for table salt imitates a baroque silver shape. They are of course export porcelain for the luxury English or Continental market.

The attractive painting in the centre is, however, entirely Chinese. The graceful Daoist immortal Lan Caihe Ho, with her emblematic hoe and basket of flowers, is shown accompanied by her deer and a flying crane above, symbolising longevity. She is appearing before a kneeling woman beneath a pine tree, who offers her a branch of lingzhi fungus, which also is supposed to promote long life.

The concave sides of the salts are decorated with insects and sprays of chrysanthemum. One has a small chip under the rim, but otherwise they are perfect.
