Provenance • Formerly in a European private collection. • A Chinese porcelain famille rose export plate of similar subject dates to circa 1740 from the collection of A. Salgueiro Baptista, Lisbon is illustrated by Franҫois and Nicole Hervouét and Yves Bruneau in The Porcelain of the East India Company, 1986, no. 7.78, p. 169. • These paintings are taken after a European print which would have been sent to Canton in the 18th century.
Description
Pair of Chinese export European subject reverse paintings on glass, each painted with a lady bathing at the side of the river with her feet below the water line, one with her washing her feet, the other with the lady drying her hair beside rockwork and plants and each with a peeping Tom, hiding behind rockwork or trees.

Total length 11 ¾ inches x 14 inches, 29.9 cm x 39.5 cm.
