Description
This beautiful and serene figure of Bhaiṣajyaguru, the Buddha of healing and medicine, is seated in the lotus position on a waisted lotus plinth, holding his emblem, the myrobalan fruit, in his right hand, and a monk’s begging bowl in his left. His long ears represent wisdom, and he has the Buddha’s characteristic high-piled hair coloured in blue. The rest of the body and the stand has been mercury gilded, though this is now quite abraded, partly by the touch of those seeking healing, exposing a bronze metal with fairly high copper content.
