Provenance Ex collection Dr Van Rossum, The Hague. Dr Van Rossum was a collector active in the 1960s and 70s, who bought mainly from auctions such as Mak Van Waay.
Description
A powerfully-carved late Ming seated figure of a lion, shown looking back over its shoulders, the prominent eyes and square-cut muzzle characteristic of the period. His tail is shaped to incorporate the russet skin of the original Yarkand river pebble, the surface with an attractive soft polish. The accompanying wood stand is probably 19th century or earlier.
