An imposing 19th Century Meissen Schneeballen Vase

Date & Origin c. 1860, Germany
Dimensions

83 cm (32 inc)
Description
Johann Joachim Kaendler's delicate schneeballen decoration of 1739 is one of his many contributions to the long and successful history of Meissen porcelain. The hundreds and often thousands of small painstakingly hand made and applied porcelain flowers that form these incredible pieces are typically then further applied with vines and birds in various forms.

This imposing 83cm vase, circa 1860, is a supreme and rare example of Meissen’s fine quality and workmanship being the largest of the snowball vases created. It was likely to have been originally conceived in the 1760’s and would have only been made for either Exhibition or a special commission due to its complicated and labour intensive design. A charming detail is the feature of a canary and snowball clusters inside the reticulated area in the lower section of the vase.
