Item Description / Dealer Expertise

A rare William and Mary period small floral marquetry longcase clock of 8-Day duration and outside countwheel strike on the hour. The 10 inch brass dial with its raised silvered brass chapter ring has a very finely matted centre, inset datework and a subsidiary seconds dial. The blued steel hands are beautifully wrought and the movement has bolt and shutter maintaining power. The maker’s signature appears on the dial plate below VI.
The well proportioned case is of veneered olivewood with fine flower and bird marquetry panels offset by ebony veneers. The trunk has half round ebonised mouldings and there is a glass lenticle in the door to show the pendulum swing. The square hood has ebonised barley twist pillars and a band of foliate marquetry with some green leaves across the top, below the cornice moulding.
Date: circa 1695.
Height: 75 ½ in (192 cm)
