Description
A Fine Georgian Kneehole Commode Dressing Table

Constructed in Honduras mahogany, rising from bracket feet, the kneehole of concave form, housing three cock beaded mahogany lined graduated drawers, with the original locks, fitted with swan neck handles, having columned front quadrants: the false top drawer, of serpentine shape with a thumbnail moulded edge, has a hinged top, with the interior housing a mirror with the original plate on a ratchet easel stand, flanked by six compartments, and four wells.

This form of 'Commode Dressing Table' became fashionable in the 1760s, with designs delineated by William Ince & John Mayhew in 'The Universal System of Household Furniture' of 1762, Thomas Chippendale's 'The Gentleman and Cabinet Maker's Directory' 3rd edition of 1763, as well as Hepplewhite's 'Cabinet Maker & Upholsterer' Guide' of 1794
