Description
This charismatic god of literature is depicted in Ming official’s garments, with the long-sleeved flowing robes and the characteristic hat and belt, both of which bear jade emblems of rank. He is seated on a chair emblematic of his authority. The expression is one of a rather masterful serenity. The holes around his mouth and chin would originally have contained horse-hair whiskers, now long gone. The creamy, unctuous glaze has a slightly ivory tone.

P J Donnelly in 'Blanc de Chine' 1969 illustrates several comparable figures which he dates to the early- to mid-seventeenth century, see plates 96, 97 and 102.
