17th-century Chinese bronze elephant scroll weight

Offered by Oriental Art
Date & Origin 1600 to 1660, China
Dimensions
W
2.25 inch (5 cm)
Description
This appealing small bronze for the scholar’s table could have been used either as a scroll or paper weight, or as a rest for a brush. It is highly unusual in that the rather sly-looking elephant has a lion on his back, recalling groups with mother and baby lions. I don’t recall seeing this configuration before, though both are highly auspicious creatures in the Chinese bestiary. The elephant was clearly not portrayed from life; its posture is far too sinuous and it has a horse’s tail!

The beast is well cast in a fairly brassy metal, with a soft brown patination, slightly rubbed at high points such as the end of the trunk or the lion’s nose. It has incised details for various features including the stylised roundels on the elephant’s shoulders, head and rump. It has an early twentieth-century Chinese wood stand.
